From home grown hops…
Residents from across St Monica Trust’s 5x retirement villages and 4x care homes helped to plant, water, weed and grow our hops.
Our bumper yield for Year 1 bucked the national trend and brought joy to so many residents, staff, volunteers and family members.
We hand delivered the hops to Wiper & True – an independent Bristol based brewery – who adopted an innovative approach to an age old brewing tradition.
Together we created the Hundred Not Out centenary brew, celebrating 100 years of St Monica Trust.
…to a beer with purpose
Hoppiness is a program centred around care homes and people living with dementia.
We aim to challenge stereotypes – from the active contribution of older adults, to their freedom to enjoy a drink after a hard day’s work!
Throughout the program we used a range of tools from reminiscence to horticultural therapy to stimulate senses, new connections and make the program inclusive to all.
All funds raised will go towards dementia-friendly gardening and bringing joy and #hoppiness to other care homes.

Where can I taste it?
We are both saddened – and yet thrilled – to say our full batch of centenary beer (all 3,000 litres of it) has now SOLD OUT!
We are so grateful to our brewing partners Wiper & True for making it happen, the volunteers who grew the hops and everyone who bought a can or case!
The hops are already growing back up the bines, so watch this space for news of our 2026 brew…
